Pierre Manigault (1664-1729)

Huguenot Brandy Distiller & Merchant, settled at Charleston, South Carolina

He was a French Huguenot (his surname is pronounced "Man-eh-go") born at La Rochelle who came to South Carolina with his brother, Gabriel (later a house builder who died when he fell off a roof), and settled on 100-acres at French Santee. In 1701, he sold his land and moved into Charleston where he built a brandy distillery and became a merchant. In 1699, he married Judith Giton and had two children. His son went on to become perhaps the wealthiest merchant in South Carolina. Their descendants remain prominent in Charleston today as the owners of the city's daily newspaper, The Post and Courier, first purchased in 1896 by his great-great-grandson.
