Pierre-Gustave-Gaspard Joly (1798-1865)

Wine Merchant, Daguerreotypist & Seigneur de Lotbinière, Quebec

He was born in Frauenfeld, Switzerland and was a merchant in his father's champagne business. He married a French-Canadian heiress and became an amateur Daguerreotypist, famous for being the first to photograph the Acropolis of Athens and some ancient Egyptian monuments in 1839. He was the father of Sir Henri-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière, Prime Minister of Quebec from 1878 to 1879.
