Philip John Budworth (1818-1885)

Captain Philip J. Budworth J.P., D.L., of Greensted Hall, Essex

He was born and grew up at High Laver, Essex. He was educated at Eton College and served as a Captain in the Essex Rifles. He succeeded to Greensted Hall on the death of his father in 1861. In 1876, he published a history of the Parishes of Greensted-Budworth, Chipping Ongar and High Laver with an account of the family history of the Cleeve and Budworth families. In 1878, he was appointed High Sheriff of Essex. Budworth Hall in Chipping Ongar - a large public assembly room with reading and coffee rooms - was built with funds provided for by him and was named in his honor in 1887. He was married twice (Blanche Trimmer and Anne Emily Thomas) and was the father of several sons including Major-General Charles Budworth.
