Philip de Visme (1719-1762)

Captain Philippe/Philip de Visme, of "The Hermitage" Paramus, New Jersey

He was born in London and came to America with the British Army where he married the widowed Mrs Anne (Stillwell) Bartow. He was known as 'The Hermit' and is therefore thought to have been the builder of "The Hermitage" in Ho-Ho-Kus, Bergen County, New Jersey. He certainly owned the land having purchased it from William Prevost in 1745. His stepdaughter, Theodosia, married Aaron Burr, the controversial 3rd Vice President of the United States. He had five children with Anne (to whom he was married at Trinity Church, New York City, in 1751) and died at New York.
