Noreen (Stonor) Drexel (1922-2012)

Hon. (Mildred Sophia) Noreen (Stonor) Drexel

Born in England, she came to America as a teenager on the eve of World War Two. She dedicated all her life to "the sick, troubled and poor" notably in regards to health care and public education. Two buildings at Salve Regina University are named for her as is a ward at the Newport Hospital. She had "a broad outlook on humanitarian matters" and was chosen to be the representative of the League of Red Cross Societies at the United Nations. She was a hugely popular figure around about Newport, remembered as a humanitarian as well as for her "humility and grace".
