Newbold LeRoy Edgar (1863-1924)

Newbold LeRoy Edgar, of Laurel Road, Tuxedo Park, New York

He graduated from both the University of Paris in France and from Columbia University. He was the half brother of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, the last member of the American Bonaparte family. Newbold was an attorney and the owner of one of the largest libraries on Naval History in the United States. During World War I, he was recruited into the Naval Intelligence with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander acting as section chief in charge of all correspondence with naval attachés. According to Jeffrey Dorwart's History of Naval Intelligence, "he selected assistant attachés, appointed civilian secret agents and expanded secret intelligence funds". He lived between 125 East 40th Street in Manhattan and his imposing 32-room home in Tuxedo Park (see images) noted for its oak-panelled library and the stained glass windows on the ground floor that all bore his family crest. His well-known widow remarried the Greek Grand Marshal Count Alexander Mercati whose mother-in-law from his first marriage was the rather interesting former Abbie Pankhurst who became a Serbian Princess.
