Nelson Gilbert Reynolds (1814-1881)

Industrialist, of "Trafalgar Castle" Whitby; Sheriff of Ontario Co., Ontario

He was born at Kingston, Upper Canada, and was educated at Upper Canada College in Toronto. At the age of fifteen he was sent to a military college in England and on returning to Canada four years later he worked in the Hudson Bay Company Territories in the Canadian West. Before turning 21, he was elected to Parliament for the County of Hastings, but couldn't take his seat n account of his age. He was tried for treason after the Upper Canada Rebellion but was acquitted on lack of evidence. He was President of the Marmora Founding & Smelting Company as well as becoming involved in railroads and banking. Having held nearly every municipal office in Belleville and the County of Hastings, he was elected Sheriff of Ontario County in 1854 and held that position until his death in 1881. In 1862, completed his 73-room home at Whitby that he named Trafalgar Castle. In 1852, he married Frances Armstrong and they had twelve children of whom seven (listed) survived to adulthood.
