Metcalf Bowler (1726-1789)

Judge Metcalf Bowler, Merchant & Speaker of the Rhode Island Assembly

He was born in London and came to America with his father. He represented Newport in the Rhode Island General Assembly and for 19-years was Speaker of the House. For six years, he was a Judge of the Superior Court and was briefly Chief Justice. In 1765, he was chosen to represent Rhode Island at the Stamp Act Congress in New York. According to the New York Public Library this picture is of him, but is most likely wrong as according to family records (and fashions) it actually depicts his father. His house (see images) became the Vernon mansion. His grandson built Mount Storm
