Matthew Morgan (1798-1862)

President of the Canal & Banking Co., New Orleans & M. Morgan & Sons, New York

On coming to New York, in partnership with Hickson W. Field, he bought nearly the whole block fronting Broadway between Waverly and Washington Places and in 1843 opened the New York Hotel at 721 Broadway which was "an unqualified success" and home to among others the millionaire recluse Joshua Jones.
