Mathilda (Douglas) Maitland (1789-1887)
Mrs Mathilda (Douglas) Maitland, of Gelston Castle
She inherited Gelston Castle (pictured) from her uncle Sir William Douglas and she lived there with her husband from 1813 up until 1887. Her eccentric and fiery first cousin, Harriet Douglas Cruger, built a house in Herkimer County, New York, that she named Gelston Castle and was very loosely based on its Scottish namesake.
