She was the daughter of Powell and Julia (May, of Baltimore) McRa of Charleston, South Carolina. She married her first husband, Robert R. Livingston, in 1865. In 1882, she married her late husband's older brother, Henry Walter Livingston. From 1900 until her death she lived with her daughter Jacqueline in Paris.
