She was the daughter of John and Jane (Hooglandt) Byvanck. Her portrait (pictured) shows her at about six or seven years old, "not long after the episode related by herself to her son-in-law, John Cullen Van Rensselaer, when she was toasted by George Washington in the presence of his officers while guests at her father's residence in New Jersey after the retreat from the Battle of Kip's Bay." She was married in 1790.
