Marshall Rutgers Kernochan (1880-1955)

Composer & President of the Galaxy Music Corporation, New York

He studied music at the Institute of Musical Arts in New York (today's Juilliard School) with Percy Goetschius, anf then in Frankfurt, Germany, with Ivan Knorr. As a music publisher in New York, in 1931 he founded the Galaxy Music Corporation. His best-known songs included "We Two Together" and "Smuggler's Song" set to words by Rudyard Kipling. He was the Grand Marshal and Grand Treasurer of the Masons for the State of New York, and a prominent figure in Tuxedo Park and at the Jekyll Island Club. In 1918, he was married in Paris to Caroline Hatch who was serving as nurse in France during World War I. They were the parents of one son who established the Columbia University Law School's Kernochan Center for Law, Media & the Arts. They lived between their townhouse (see images) in New York City, 7 Sutton Place; their country home in Tuxedo Park; and, their summer home in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
