Maj. Thomas Melvill (1751-1832)

Merchant & Member of the Sons of Liberty, of Boston, Massachusetts

He was born in Boston and was educated at the Boston Latin School and Princeton. He was familiarly known as the "last of the cocked hats." He was an aide-de-camp to Gen. Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was one of the celebrated "Boston Tea Party." For thirty years he held the situation of Naval officer of the Port of Boston, having been appointed by Thomas Jefferson and retained by the succeeding administrations. He was the grandfather of the author of Moby Dick etc., Herman Melville.
