Mahlon Day Spaulding (1827-1888)

Sugar Merchant, of Boston & Pope's Hill, Dorchester, Massachusetts

He was born in Anson, Maine, and became a partner in Nash, Spaulding & Co., Sugar Merchants, at Boston, the senior partner being his bachelor brother, John P. Spaulding, "the Sugar King and Philanthropist". Mahlon was the projector of the iron vessel "Novelty" which was built by the firm and was designed to carry liquid cargo in bulk - the first vessel of its kind ever built and sailed successfully. He was married twice and had five children (three of whom survived to adulthood - listed).
