Luman Reed (1787-1836)
Merchant & Patron of the Arts, of 13 Greenwich Street, New York City
He was described by Henry Cady Sturges, "characteristics as cherished by father... While he was a man of no education but the simplest, he sought to surround himself with both artistic and literary men, and to use his business ability, through them, for the benefit of his generation. He built a large house at 13 Greenwich Street, and there founded the first Art Gallery in New York. This was open to the public one day a week. He was a great friend and patron of A.B. Durand and commissioned him to paint the portraits of all the Presidents... He was constantly sending artists abroad to educate, and in every way he sought to elevate and refine the time in which he lived."
