Lloyd Phoenix (1841-1926)

He was born in New York, the grandson of one of the city's first multi-millionaires, Stephen Whitney. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland (1861). He fought in the Civil War and witnessed the battle between the Monitor and the Virginia in 1865. On retiring, he entered into business in New York and became Rear Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. His most famous yacht was the 171-foot schooner Intrepid in which he won the NYYC's "The Cruise: Trophy in 1909. That Trophy has since been named "The Lloyd Phoenix Trophy" to improve, "relations with the civilian yachting community by bringing sailors from Chesapeake Bay yacht clubs to compete with a midshipmen team in the Luders yawls". He was unmarried and lived in a townhouse in New York, 21 East 33rd Street (see image), redesigned by Stanford White in 1884. He died worth $5 million (roughly $65 million today).
