He emigrated to Virginia in 1640 from Ampthill in Bedfordshire. In 1647, he was chosen to be a member of the deputation sent to invite Charles II to Virginia. He was Sergeant-Major of the Virginia Militia. He married Lucy, only daughter of Captain Robert Higginson, and they had just one son.
