Lewis Burwell (1737-1779)

of "Whitemarsh" High Sheriff of Gloucester County, Virginia

He was born in Virginia and educated in England at Balliol College, Oxford. He studied law at the Inner Temple in London before returning to "Whitemarsh" that he inherited from his father in 1756. He served as High Sheriff of Gloucester County (1767) and as a Member of the House of Burgesses (1769-1774). He was a supporter of the Episcopal Church and the Conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was married twice. By Judith, daughter of Mann Page II of Rosewell, they had 5-children (listed above). His second wife was Lucy, daughter of William Randolph of "Wilton".
