Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839)

Col. Lawrence Lewis, of Woodlawn House, Fairfax Co., Virginia

He was a nephew of George Washington and served as his uncle's deputy and secretary at Mount Vernon. He married a great-granddaughter of 5th Lord Baltimore and as a wedding present, Washington gave him part of the Mount Vernon estate on which he built Woodlawn (see images), designed by William Thornton, the first architect of the Capitol. Only three of their eight children lived to adulthood.
