Julius Augustus Fleischmann (1871-1925)

Julius Fleischmann, President of Fleischmann Yeast Co. & Mayor of Cincinnati

He was born at Cincinnati, Ohio. He left college in 1894 to work as the general manager of the Fleischmann Yeast Company, founded by his father in 1868. Julius succeeded his father as President in 1897 and under his leadership the company became the world’s largest producer of yeast and “America’s first commercial producer of gin”. Outside of work, Julius was known for his interests in yachting, baseball, polo, and horse racing. In 1900 he became the youngest Mayor of Cincinnati and he was responsible for laying out public parks, strengthening the local railroad system, and improving the city’s police force. Latterly, he lived between New York City, his country estate at Sands End on Long Island, and the Hotel Plaza in Miami. He died playing polo in Miami and the bulk of his $60-million estate was left to his surviving son and daughter.
