Julia (Chinn) Johnson (1790-1833)
Mrs Julia (Chinn) Johnson
She was part African through one great-grandparents but was otherwise European. She was born into slavery and was purchased by U.S. Vice-President Richard Mentor Johnson to whom she was unofficially married (it being illegal for a master to marry a slave) at a ceremony held at Great Crossing Baptist Church. They lived together as common law husband and wife and she managed the plantation and his business interests when he was away. They had two children together.
