Joshua Waters Hughes (1808-1901)

He was granted 40-acres - "a none to prosperous piece of land" - in Scotland County, Missouri, for his services fighting Indians in Illinois. He was descended from Jesse Hughes who settled in Powhattan County, Virginia, in the early 17th century. He was the great-grandfather of Howard Hughes, the legendary aviation pioneer etc. who from 1960 to 1976 was generally considered to be the richest man in the States.
