Joseph Sebastian Cabot (1796-1874)

Mayor of Salem, Massachusetts State Bank Commissioner & Bank President

He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, where he became President of the Asiatic Bank, a position he held until his death with only brief intervals when called upon in his capacity as Massachusetts State Bank Commissioner. He was also President of the Salem Savings Bank and the Harmony Grove Cemetery Corporation. He served as the 4th Mayor of Salem for four years (1845-48) and was President of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. He was married twice. In 1843, he married Martha, daughter of Maj. Thomas Stearns. In 1852, he married his second wife, Susan Burley, daughter of Frederick Howes, President of the Salem Maritime Insurance Company.
