Gen. Joseph Lovell (1824-1869)

Cotton Planter, of Natchez, Mississippi

He was born at Washington D.C. in the house now known as the Blair House. He was educated at Lee before entering Williams College and graduating from Yale (1844). He studied law in New York and was admitted to the bar in 1847, receiving his A.M. degree from Yale in 1853. He practised law in New York with a friend from college, McKinstry, and continued alone after he died. In 1859, he married Louisa, daughter of General John A. Quitman of Natchez, where he removed to start life as a cotton planter in partnership with his brother, William, who had married Louisa's sister. On the outbreak of war, he joined the staff of his brother Mansfield with the rank of General and was with him at New Orleans when he was defeated. After the war, he returned to Natchez and resumed life as a cotton planter. He died leaving a daughter.
