Joseph H. White (1824-1915)
Dry Goods Merchant, of "Elmhurst" Brookline, Massachusetts
He was born at Goshen, Massachusetts, and was educated at Easthampton Academy. He became an wholesale importer of dry goods and a commission merchant at Boston. In 1873, he reorganized the Manchester Mills in New Hampshire and his firm, White, Payson & Co., subsequently became the mill's selling agent. He was also President of the Eliot National Bank. He lived with his family at 46 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, until 1882 when they moved full time to "Elmhurst" (see images) 535 Boylston Street in Brookline. Designed by Peabody & Stearns, it was the largest estate on the south side of Fisher Hill, overlooking the Brookline reservoir. His first wife, Mary Stanyan, died in childbirth and their son died shortly afterwards. In 1855, he married Ellen, daughter of Isaac Tewksbury, and they had four children (listed).
