Joseph Caton (1731-1803)

Ship's Captain & Slave Trader, of Liverpool

He was the son of William and Isabel (Chaffers) Caton, of Heysham, Lancashire. He owned his own ship at Liverpool and was a slave trader and prior to that a herring curer. He married a girl of sixteen and had eight children of whom five survived him including Mrs William Shelmerdine of Longsight and Mrs William Woodville who was the grandmother of the famous American artist Richard Caton Woodville. Through his eldest son, Richard, he was the grandfather of the "Three American Graces".
