Jonathan Sewell (1766-1839)

LL.D., Chief Justice of Lower Canada (Quebec) & Speaker of the Legislative Council

He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was thirty years Chief Justice of Lower Canada, advisor to Governor Craig, leader of the 'Chateau Clique,' early advocate of Confederation, man of culture, and patron of the arts. He was married in 1796 at Quebec City to Henrietta, daughter of William Smith, Chief Justice of New York & Lower Canada. They were survived by twelve (listed) of their sixteen children.
