John William Wallace (1815-1884)

John William Wallace, LL.D., of Philadelphia; Reporter of the U.S. Supreme Court

He was a nephew of Horace Binney, one of the country's most eminent lawyers. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (1833) and embarked on a legal career. He became Master in Chancery for the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and Reporter of the Supreme Court of the United States. He published several books including, "The Reporters" and "Cases in the Circuit Court of the United States". He was President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of England; and, 1st Vice President of the Alumni of the University of Pennsylvania. His wife, Dorothy Willing, was a grand-daughter of Thomas Willing, 1st President of the First Bank of the United States. Their daughter, Rebecca, married John T. Spencer, of Philadelphia & "Althorpe" Newport, Rhode Island.
