John Ward (1767-1816)

Col. John Ward, Mayor of Charleston & Member of the South Carolina Senate

He was born at Charleston, South Carolina. He was a planter as well as a lawyer. His plantation on Johns Island was called "Seven Oaks," named for a huge seven-branched live oak there. When the British took Charleston, he hid his valuables on his plantation, including a set of Lowestoft china later inherited by his grandson, Maitland Armstrong. He is buried in New York next to Alexander Hamilton
