John Syme (1710-1732)
Col. John Syme, of "Studley Plantation" Hanover Co., Virginia
He was described as, "a travelled gentleman of rank and fortune, whose name (was) still freshly remembered from the delicious, tender, white-rind, red-meated watermelon which he brought to this country from the shores of the Mediterranean, and which (was) still called Syme's melon".
