John Stuart (1740-1811)
Rev. Dr John Stuart, M.A., D.D., of Kingston, Upper Canada
He was born at Paxton, Pennsylvania. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., 1763; M.A., 1770; D.D. honoris causa, 1799). He was ordained by the Bishop of London in 1770 and served as a Missionary to the Mohawks at Fort Hunter, New York (1770-1781), and during the Revolution was Chaplain to the 2nd Royal Yorkers (Sir John Johnson's Corps). Settling at Montreal, he became a schoolmaster (1781-1785) before serving as a Missionary to the Mohawks at the Bay of "Kenti" and to the Whites at Kingston (1785-1811). He was appointed Bishop's Official for Upper Canada (1789-1811) and finally Chaplain to the Legislative Council of Upper Canada (1792-1807). He died at Kingston, where he was the first schoolmaster in Upper Canada and he induced Lieutenant-Governor Hope to erect a school house. In 1775, he married Jane, daughter of George Okill of Philadelphia who was in business with his brother the timber merchant, ivory trader and shipbuilder John Okill of Lee Hall, near Liverpool. They had 8-children.
