John Scollay (1711-1790)

Merchant, of Boston, Massachusetts

He owned property on the corner of Tremont and Queen/Court Street that became known as "Scollay's Buildings". By the late 19th century, they were blocking the flow of traffic and were demolished. The resulting open space became known as "Scollay Square". He and his wife had thirteen children, ten of whom (five boys, five girls) lived to adulthood. He was a great-grandfather of Herman Melville.
