John Routh (1795-1867)

Cotton Planter, of "Routhland" Natchez, Adams Co., Mississippi

His home seen in the images was built circa 1815. It was a gift from his father to celebrate his coming of age, and was sited on the Routhland plantation but is not to be confused with the house built by his father which his sister replaced with Dunleith. John Routh owned several plantations along the Mississippi River, notably in Louisiana, but Routhland was his winter home. Before the Civil War, he produced 8,842 bales of cotton in just one year, and his silver dinner serve alone cost him $35,000. He served in the Louisiana legislature and with Wilkinson's Rifles in the Battle of New Orleans. He died during war at the Kenilworth Plantation on Lake St. Joseph in Louisiana, and the house was sold out of the family in 1870. He and his wife had five children, of whom only two (listed) survived infancy.
