John Robinson (1650-1723)

The Rt. Rev. John Robinson, Lord Privy Seal & Lord Bishop of London

He was born at Cleasby, Yorkshire, and was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford. For thirty years he was the Ambassador to Sweden. He returned to England in 1709 and was successively appointed Dean of Windsor, Dean of the Chapel Royal, Lord Privy Seal, and Lord Bishop of London. In 1712, he represented England as First Plenipotentiary Minister at the Congress of Utrecht which included the Wars of the Spanish Succession. He was married twice but died without children by either marriage. Having purchased the 9000-acre Manor of Hewick in his native Yorkshire, he bequeathed this estate to his nephew, Christopher Robinson, of Virginia.
