John Robert Metcalf (1916-2000)
John R. Metcalf, of 2864 Broadway, San Francisco
He was born in Oakland and graduated from Stanford University (1937). He served in the army during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he went to work for Alexander & Alexander Inc., becoming vice president. After retiring in 1976, he served on the boards of directors of the United Way, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Opera Association and the Cow Palace. He was known as "Johnny Met" and married Catherine, daughter of Thomas and Katherine Hind (Renton) Rolph. They had three daughters: Katherine Metcalf Nelson, of Seattle, Washington; Elizabeth Huntington Metcalf of Selma, Oregon; and Mary Rolph Metcalf of Potter Valley, California.
