John Porteous (1741-1782)

Merchant, of Montreal

He was born in Scotland and by at least 1765 had established himself as a merchant at Montreal. In 1771, he married into French-Canadian nobility on marrying the daughter of Claude-Antoine Drouet de Carqueville (1715-1755) who was shot by the British in a skirmish near modern-day Pittsburgh. After John's death, his friend James McGill acted as trustee of his estate for the benefit of his nine children.
