John Leacock (b.1789)
of Leacock's Madeira Wine, retired to Oak Hill, Isle of Wight
He was resident at the Isle of Madeira when he was married in London to Charlotte, daughter of Colonel Gledstanes. In his book, The Boy I Left Behind Me, Stephen Leacock wrote, "The Leacocks had made a lot of money out of plantations in Madeira and the Madeira wine trade, so much that my great-grandfather John Leacock had retired and bought the house at Oak Hill." They had just one son.
