John Knox Grogan (1760-1815)

John Knox Grogan J.P., of Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford

His elder brother, Cornelius, was executed for his role in the 1798 Rebellion as Commissary-General to the United Irishman. In 1810, after a heavy fine Johnstown Castle (acquired by the Grogan family in 1692) was restored to John who started the works - completed by his second son, Hamilton Knox Grogan Morgan M.P. - to create the Gothic-Revival castle as seen today on the "bones" of the original Norman tower house. He was married twice and had a daughter (by his first wife) and three sons (by his second wife), the eldest of whom was disinherited and the younger two took the additional surname of 'Morgan' in 1828. He died at Leeson Street in Dublin.
