He was born in Ireland at Newry, Co. Armagh, and came to Canada with his family in 1844 when his father - a Captain in the Royal Engineers - was asked to settle a border dispute between New Brunswick and Maine. In 1876, he was appointed Deputy Judge of the County Court of Northumberland & Durham, Ontario, and he was a lifelong member of the Smithsonian Institute.
