John Haggerty (1774-1863)
Merchant, of New York City
He was the Senior Partner in Haggerty & Sons, Auctioneers & Commission Merchants. His brother-in-law, James P. Allaire, was the founder of the Allaire Iron Works in New York City. When Allaire retired (according to one report, through the machinations of Haggerty who may have been scandalized by the Allaire's marriage to a woman 26 years his junior in 1846), Haggerty and Cornelius Vanderbilt took a controlling share of the company.
