John Givan (1786-1842)

Scottish Dry Goods Merchant of New York City, Importer of British Goods

His father was a Scotsman who emigrated to America in 1795 and became a farmer in Eastchester, Westchester County, New York. John was born in Scotland at Ednam in Roxburghshire, and became an accountant. By 1813, he was in New York City as a partner in the firm of Van Schaick & Givan, importers of British dry goods. By 1824, he was a senior partner in the firm of Givan & Arden, and retired to Dutchess County, New York. One of his sisters married Thomas Arden.
