John Gerard Heckscher (1838-1908)

of 18 West 88th Street, New York; Founder of the National Horse Show Association

He was born in New York City and was educated by private tutors. In the Civil War, he fought with the 7th Regiment and retired with the rank of Captain. For many years he was a broker on Wall Street but, "no man in the country was better known at the horse shows". He was the Founder and Secretary of the National Horse Show Association and played a leading role in its success. He was a Member of Metropolitan, New York Yacht, Union and Coney Island Jockey clubs. He was married three times and had two adult daughters (listed) by his first wife. He was the father-in-law of Egerton Leigh Winthrop Jr. and Mayor of New York City, George B. McClellan Jr.
