Born at Charlestown, Massachusetts, he graduated from Dummer Academy & Harvard University. He settled at Portland, Maine, where he practised as a lawyer and was Inspector of the U.S. Excise for the District of Maine. On being appointed a Judge in 1804 he moved to Boston, but always returned to Portland during the summers.
