John Fowle (1756-1823)

Capt. John Fowle, of Watertown, Massachusetts

He was on the staff of the Marquis de Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown, and served as an officer with "credit and reputation" throughout the Revolutionary War. He was Adjutant, Lieutenant, and Captain in Smith's 3rd Regiment, and Adjutant and Lieutenant in Wiggleworth's 13th Regiment in 1777-78. In the following year, he was in Sullivan's Rhode Island Campaign. He was commissioned Captain in the same regiment in 1779, and in Mellen's 3rd Regiment in 1783. He was Selectman in Watertown from 1790-92, and again in 1820. He was one of the original members of the Society of the Cincinnati, and one of its Standing Committee. He lived at 49 Mount Auburn Street in Watertown and had 7-children, most notable among them his beautiful and capable daughters who gave rise to what became a popular couplet: "The Fowles of Watertown, is the Fair of every town".
