John Colles (1751-1807)

Merchant, of 42 Pearl Street, New York

He was born in Ireland and was a publisher in Dublin before coming out to America with his cousin Christopher Colles in 1771, settling in New York. Christopher had been brought up with John and his family after his own father died in 1750 and he became the inventor and engineer known for his water distribution work in New York City. John was a younger brother of William Colles, of Millmount House, Co. Kilkenny, the owner of the famous Kilkenny Marble Works.
