John Carter (1696-1742)

Col. John Carter, of "Corotoman" & "Shirley" Secretary of Virginia

He was born at Corotoman Plantation, Lancaster Co., Virginia. He studied law in London and was admitted as an Attorney-at-law at Middle Temple. Returning to Virginia, he was appointed Secretary of the Colony in 1722 and served as a Member of the King's Council from 1724. He married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Col. Edward Hill of "Shirley". They were the parents of three children (listed above).
