John Campbell Burton (1779-1827)

Merchant, of Calcutta

He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and entered King's Inns, Dublin (1795), in training to become a Barrister-at-law. At some stage he quit the law and went to Calcutta in India as a merchant where he owned a ship, the Venus. His second wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Major-General William Farquhar of Early Banks, Perthshire, the 1st British Governor of both Malacca and Singapore.
