John Butler Coles (1760-1827)

John B. Coles, 1st President of the Eagle Fire Insurance Company, New York

He was named for his maternal grandfather, John Butler, the owner of three- fifths of the Island of Dosoris (see Dosoris). He co-owned two large mills there with his brother, Nathaniel, who superintended them while living on West Island. John lived in New York City and became the first President of the Eagle Fire Insurance Company and a Director of the Bank of New York at the same time as Nehemiah Rogers, Jacob LeRoy, John McVickar, Rufus King etc. He married Elizabeth Underhill and they were the parents of six children who lived to adulthood (above).
