John Alexander Clinton Gray (1815-1898)
Wholesale Dry Goods Merchant, of 43 Fifth Avenue, New York City
He was born at the home of his step-grandfather, Gen. James Clinton, in Little Britain, Orange Co., New York. He grew up in New York City and became a successful wholesale dry goods merchant and a director in the Goodhue Fire Insurance Company. Retiring in 1852, he was appointed Vice-President of the original Central Park Commission, invested in various railroad enterprises, and spent much of his time travelling abroad in Europe. In 1857, he built his mansion (see images) at the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 11th Street. In 1837, he married Susan, daughter of George and Susan (Romeyn) Zabriskie and they were the parents of five children.
